Matt’s practice focuses on advising and defending commercial motor carriers, which includes semi-tractor/trailers, para-transit vehicles, and taxicabs, against personal injury and property damage claims. Matt has been litigating commercial transportation claims since 2000. He also handles a variety of commercial liability claims involving premises liability, products liability, job site injuries, trademark infringement, recreational liability, and tribal law. Matt also has a background in business litigation and transactions, commercial defect litigation, and asbestos litigation.
Matt conducts training for insurance and commercial transportation professionals on litigation issues and risk management. He is also an active Board Member for the Oregon Trucking Association’s Safety Management Council. Matt has served as the Oregon Association Defense Counsel’s Publications Liaison for the Transportation Group writing case notes and articles for OADC’s Quarterly Periodical “The Verdict.”
Prior to joining Smith Freed Eberhard, Matt gained significant commercial trucking litigation experience at another law firm. Matt regularly defends commercial entities and individuals against multi-million dollar trucking and other personal injury cases.
Matt has extensive experience defending commercial motor carriers and businesses involving multi-million dollar personal injury and wrongful death claims. Matt also routinely practices in Federal Court and Tribal Court.

Matt routinely presents on commercial trucking liability to insurance companies and insurers. He has also written articles for insurance companies on various topics concerning commercial auto liability, products liability, premises liability and construction defect issues including, “Premises Liability: When Life Throws You Lemonade, Who Is Liable?” The Verdict. (Summer 2011), and “Hands Off - New Cell Phone Laws” (2012).
